Hobby Progress Update

I have been pluggin along on Hobby stuff. Most of the work has been painting and assembling models for the, now, 3 (!) Hobby Progress Challenges that I have signed up for. Having a deadline is a great motivation for anything and this is the most painting that I have ever done.

Here are the links to the forums and some highlight photos (check out the forums, there are more pics);

The first and main is The Independent Characters-

First Month's Challenge, Sanguinary Guard
Second, Termy Reclusiarch
Third, 5 DC with bolters

Proud of the helmets!
Second is Bad Dice-
1st and 2nd, both Glad Guard (Tabletop standard)

Third is Garagehammer-

Slave Orcs, not super good picture but they aren't painted yet...

The wife started her job as well! Congratulations to her. She is working as a concierge at the Four Seasons Hualalai. Seems like it is going to be a tough job but she knows what she is about so I think she can handle it. She's working mornings right now so I have a load of time for hobbying, though it'll be mostly evenings for her once her normal work starts. And her paycheck means more minis for daddy! (I don't think she actually reads these)

Role playing wise, about to send the group into a dungeon. Haven't put one together myself in a long time so I'm looking forward to it. The game until now has been above ground and rather free, so the dungeon-grind mentality should be fun for a bit. It is a lot of work though. I have been doing a lot of riffing in the game so far, but that is not so great for dungeons so more planning. The Nikko Temple really inspired me so I am going to give it an Asian theme.

Back to painting.

Bad Dice Podcast and Honolulu

Just signed up for the Bad Dice Podcast (Warhammer Fantasy podcast out of the U.K.) hobby progress challenge as well. It is hard to resist the combined temptations of motivation and prizes for doing something that I already wanted to do. I know that trying to do two of these a month is going to be nuts so I think I'll probably go really simple (three color, simple base) on the Elves and focus on making the 40k models pretty.

Going to do WoodElves and here is the army that I have settled on;

Wood Elves 2400 pts.

  • Highborn (236) Annoyance of netlings, The Spear of Twilight, Hail of Doom Arrow, longbow, light armor, shield
  • Noble (175) BSB-The Royal Standard of Ariel, longbow
  • Noble (145) Wild Rider kindred, the Dawnspear, longbow
  • Spellsinger (175) Lv.2 (Athel Loren), Divination Orb, Befuddlement of Mischiefs, long bow
  • Glade Guard x10 (132) Musician, champion, GG longbows
  • Glade Guard x10 (132) Musician, champion, GG longbows
  • Dryads x12 (156) Champion
  • Eternal Guard x10 (150) Musician, Standard, Champion
  • Scouts x5 (97) Musician
  • Glade Riders x5 (138) Musician, champion
  • Wild Riders x5 (191) Musician, standard-Saemrath the banner of the zenith, champion
  • Tree-kin x3 (195)
  • Wardancers x5 (111) Musician, Champion
  • Treeman (285)
  • Great Eagle x2 (100)

This gives me a crap list to play in game (probably) but I can paint most of the cool models that I have for the army. I am pretty sure that is legal but if not I can change it around a bit and still remain close to the points with just these models. Also, since it is quite MSU I stand a chance of being able to complete it along with my 40k challenge. I don't play in any tournaments or anything like that so the list itself doesn't matter too much and when (if?) the Wood Elves get a reboot someday they are bound to come down in points and this will be a base I can build off of to hopefully make it a little tougher.

Honolulu was pretty much the same as last time. Lots of good food and a quick trip to the gaming store followed by me getting grumpy and wanting to come home. I don't know if it is one thing specifically but the combination of bureaucracy-stress, lots of people, long walks in direct sunlight, and always going there either right after or right before work puts me in a bad mood on the second day. Always happy to get back to Kona (though I do wish we had a game store here)

And for people that are going to have international marriages don't read websites about the interviews, it is not nearly as bad as it is made out to be. Movies and articles on the web make you think they are going to ask all of these outlandish questions (do they have a birthmark, how do they make their coffee, what soap do they use?) but that is only in extremely suspicious cases where it's obvious that it is a scam (which there was one that was very likely while we were there- doddering old man that looked dazed the whole time, with a much younger pretty foreign woman...) The interviewer asked us when we started thinking about marriage, why she said yes and what we do together. Not including the wait the entire interview took less than 15 minutes. Was totally not worth worrying about.

Though, to be fair, we don't know the results yet hahaha

Aaaaand, just cause I don't want to post without any interesting pics here is some damn cold Mauna Kea (this was '09)

(yeah those are horizontal icicles)

HPC, Fantasy, and an awesome crescent moon shot!

So the I.C. Podcast Hobby Progress Challenge has been some really good motivation. I am managing to find time to do at least a little bit of work on my Sanguinary Guard every day. I have gotten the bodies based and washed, the weapons finished and am finishing up all of their gubbins (various wings and blood drops) The last step is going to be the wings since I have not yet decided on how I am going to do them. I think I'll go with the bleached bone/ sepia combination and just not highlight them as much as the wings on the armor. Highlighting up to the pure white makes them super bright and draws a lot of the focus away from other parts of the model but on the other hand leaving them darker makes the wings look kind of dirty. Also, I am quite pleased with the red for the shoulder pads. At first I was not sure it was going to look good but it really compliments the gold. They are both rich colors so they go well together. I am just glad that I looked at the picture in the codex before I started painting so I realized their right shoulder pads were supposed to be red.

Finally got in my first 8th edition game. It was really impromptu with just a few handfuls of models chucked on the table and I am sure we missed a lot of rules but it was a lot of fun and I think I may be able to get some of my group here to play it (they are all only 40k at this point) I was having a hard time conveying the fun and the tactics of Fantasy to them though. The model types and size of the battle was fairly limited as well as my not knowing the rules as well as I should. Some of the units didn't work out like they would when used in larger games while some had their effect magnified because of the limitations.  I am sure people everywhere have similar (game/entertainment related) problems but introducing people to something that you already love can be tough. Most gamers have their pet games and bringing a group around to it can be an uphill struggle. I myself am guilty of that type of stubborn resistance at times as well though so I understand it, especially the tendency to ignore the good stuff and focus on one or two negative things that happen. Even so, Runequest Ducks are the lamest things ever.

Now I am torn on what army to play though. The three friends that might start playing Fantasy are interested in Ogres, Vampire Counts, and Empire. So I am going to play either my Wood Elves or my Skaven. I have a lot of the nicer models for wood elves and their aesthetic is cool but the army book is just so old...Skaven, on the other hand, are a new effective book but some of their models are in bad need of an update (Grey Seer!) and it is fundamentally a horde army which would kill any painting dreams. I think I'll take a good long look at the Island of Blood Skaven troops again and then make my decision.

And, as a closing note here are some nice night shots that I took the other night. Caught the moon juuuuust before sunrise. You'll not see a sharper crescent than that.
Skies so clear you can see the night side

Shooting Star, pardon the trash can

Independent Characters Hobby Progress Challenge sign-up

So one of the podcasts that I listen to is doing a progress challenge from January until November. The gist is that you complete a new unit every month and build to a tournament ready 1850 list and then have a chance to win some prizes based on how faithful you were completing your hobby goals. I love their podcast so it seemed like a fun idea so I am going to sign up.

I decided to use my Blood Angels for the challenge because they are the army that I want to have completely painted the most even if I hardly ever play with them. The rules of the challenge state that you can not use already painted units so my tac marines I have worked on so far and posted pics of here will not be eligible but I am going to do the rest of the army in the same style so I guess that they can count as practice.

Here is the army list that I have come up with;

Strike Force Castigon (1850 pts. I.C. Hobby Progress Challenge)

135- Lord Adjudicator Castigon; Combi-melta, Power Fist
185- The Knights of Baal (Honor Guard); Blood Champion, Company Standard, Power Fist, Melta Gun
35- Drop Pod

160- Reclusiarch Castus; Terminator Armor
210- The Archangels (1st Comp. Terminator Assault Squad); Thunder Hammer/Storm Shield x2, Lightning Claws x3

255- The Heralds (Sanguinary Guard); Death Masks, Power Fist, Infernus Pistols x2

170- 4th Company 3rd Squad 'Baal's Fists' (Tactical Squad); x10, Flamer, Missile Launcher

100- The Lost (Death Company); x5, bolters
35- Drop Pod

225- 4th Company 7th Squad 'The Blood Rain' (Assault Squad); Meltagun x2, Power Weapon

140- 4th Company 9th Squad 'the Hammer of Baal' (Devastator Squad); Las Cannon, Plasma Cannon, Missile Launcher, Heavy Bolter

100- 4th Company Predator, 'Baal's Spear'; Auto-cannon, Heavy Bolter Sponsons

100- 4th Company Assault Bike Squad 'Sanguine Deliverance'; Multi-Melta x2

Yes, yes, I know it is a pretty shit list that is going to have a hard time claiming objectives (Winning) and includes a number of odd choices (mixed devs, Death Masks on the Sang. Guard etc.) but the list lets me paint a number of cool models that I have and will provide me with lots of puzzle pieces to cobble together future armies (Devs repurposed as heavy weapons marines for Tactical Squads etc.)

Here are the pictures for the first months posts that I have taken so far. The pre-priming unit of Sanguinary Guard (They have been dipped/scrubbed at this point. It is a mix of my old models and some that my friend Matt gave me)

I have always had a notoriously hard time making metallics look good so I am going to do one of the models all the way through as the test so if it looks bad I do not need to scrub 5 guys, just one. So here he is primed and based with GW Calthan Brown (got the idea for brown to gold from Beasts of War)

And then here is the same model (now with magnetized Death Mask helmet) painted gold.

After looking at the models in the codex again I realized that I need to change up a few spots but I am primarily working on the metallic armor now so I will take care of that later.

Did a bunch of work on the single guy today. Here he is without wings but the body and arms are pretty much done.

Lots of Progress Recently

Just a short and sweet update.

Got a few games in recently with my orks (solo vs. Tau x2 and a team game Ork/Ork vs. Tau/Marines) so that kind of relit my green fire.

Started basing up my Gretchin and an ork or too. Went with the GW textured paint for a sand effect. Then hit that with a little bit of gravel, painted the whole thing army painter desert yellow and washed it with gryphon sepia. Then bestial brown to round out the base and badda boom!

Man, my black background is covered in lint :-(

The GW textured paint is awesome because it holds a nice shape when you slop it on, which means the wash is extra good at it's job. This might be my go to guy for simple basing in the future.

I also assembled, fully painted and based the Shokk Attack Gun (metal, thanks to my buddy Del) Amazing model to paint and build. Totally love how it came out. Gameplay however...hahaha Used it for the first time today against Kurt's Tau...1st shot teleported himself into close combat with a unit of fire warriors failed his two saves and then died!!! Total Ork nonsense but good for a laugh I guess. That means next time I'll get the insta kill S10 AP2 right? Here are some pics of the bad boy.

POOR LITTLE GUY!!

Matt gave me a finecast Weirdboy for X-Mas so I am gonna put that together and get him painted up next!

Pathfinder Session 1

A RPG group meeting, some planning sessions and a character creation session finally culminated in beginning the game last night. I think the first session went really well and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. I hope the rest of the sessions continue on like this.

It's the first game I have run in quite a while without using published materials. It's kind of weird but it actually feels like it is less work to plan a game on your own. I didn't have to read and familiarize myself with an entire adventure before first session. Just a basic overarching shape, a few initial encounters and knowing how NPCs would act and it all fell together nicely. I think because of this it feels a lot less rail-roady. The players were very active and recognized obvious hooks so were cooperative with getting everything off the ground, but there wasn't really any 'I do this cause it's obviously an adventure.'

Player breakdown goes like this;

Matt- Durgan 'Oddnoggin' Stoneskull, Dwarven cleric of the drunken God. Played as an inquisitive energetic Dwarf that celebrates the finer things in life (the major part of the drunken God's ethos)

Dana- Pyotr Burmond, Human rogue. Played somewhat dour and stoic. Immediately interested in helping others despite wrestling with some inner demons.

Thomas- Wilks Greenriver, Human Druid. Played as a traveler and beneficent guardian of Nature.

James- Kreigen Brightmoon, Human Barbarian. Played as a bombastic outgoing rough around the edges adventurer.

Liz- Kahina Star-song, Human Sorcerer. Played as an aspiring Pathfinder member, looking to prove herself and advance within the organization.

Kurt- Arfelith, Elven Wizard. Played as a traveler trying to find his place while helping others.

Jason- Ivan of the clan Hurt, Dwarven Ranger. Jason, unfortunately, was unable to make first session.

It is definitely a lot of players but we have a pretty tight-knit RPG group here in Kona so pairing any players off means someone doesn't get to play any games. We agreed on some basic table rules though so it doesn't seem at all unmanageable (no phones or distractions at the table, keep side chatter to a minimum, players as well as the DM policing tangents, etc.)

The first session opened with everyone arriving in Sandpoint one way or another. Arefelith and Pyotr by caravan from the south, Kreigen and Durgan walking in from the north carrying disturbing news, Kahina having recently moved to Sandpoint and joined the Pathfinders there. Wilks was roaming the wilderness outside of Sandpoint and would come across the group mid-day.

Pyotr and Arfelith's caravan had heard reports of theft from Caravans approaching from the South but encountered no troubles in their own travels. Kahina noticed that the Pathfinder guild leader, Brand, had been agitated recently so was expecting that something would go down soon. Arfelith met with an acquaintance in the city, Arvus Whitebeard, and was asked by him to catch up with a merchant that had left the city previously and double check if the merchant had received his goods (Arvus seems to have either misplaced them or sold them and forgot about it)

Ivan, Kreigen and Durgan, however, came across a grisly scene on their way to Sandpoint. A wrecked cart, badly lacerated horses and a mutilated pile of corpses. Ivan rushed to nearby Windsong Abbey to inform them of the scene while Kreigen and Durgan continued on to warn Sandpoint. Informing the sheriff, a man named Hemlock, they agreed to be deputized and reconnoitre the scene in exchange for room and board while in Sandpoint. Checking in and fueling up at an inn in town they came across Pyotr and Kahina discussing the state of things in Sandpoint and the Pathfinder guild there. Overhearing each other's conversations and realizing a mutual purpose, the four decided to team up and investigate. Shortly after Arfelith, on recommendation from Sheriff Hemlock, approaches them in the inn about traveling together for safety.

The group sets out from Sandpoint, travels north and encounters Wilks on the way there. Wilks noticed the disturbance in the area and decides to travel with them.

They return to the scene of the carnage and notice a bit of a pall over the area, the bodies decaying rapidly. Physical examination implies torture and robbery while a faint aura of illusion is noticed by Arfelith. The bodies are buried and set to rest by Durgan (a prayer and the sprinkling of ceremonial beer) and Wilks (the planting of a sacred seed) which lifts the pall. The party follows a faint trail further into the wilderness and encounter discarded bits of food and ratty disgusting clothing. Pursuing the trail they make camp at dusk and are ambushed by a small party of goblins. Dispatching them without too much difficulty they come to the conclusion that it was a raiding party and that at least some of them had taken part in the cart massacre (2 of the goblins were wearing human sized silk clothing)
The bodies were hastily disposed of and session one ended.

Too many Hobbies!

The progress on the 5 man BA Tac squad has just been embarrassingly slow. I just finished the second shoulder pads. Need to retouch the areas where they get super glued, get the standard to a level I like and then I can varnish them. I know I have been working on this single 5 man squad for like 2 months now, and believe, I am ashamed. Work is a flimsy excuse.

So, in that light, I have a different one. I am starting up a new Pathfinder game. Met with the group the other day to have our (pretty much yearly) state of the group address. Got everyone's opinion on how they wanted game to go, what they wanted to play etc. and then strong armed them into letting me run Pathfinder. Pathfinder is usually Matt's bag but I got the GM bug, slow season is coming, and poor Matty Matt rarely gets to play (something like two games in 10 years absurdity) The last few days has been spent putting a couple of ideas together, reviewing some of the rules and trying to figure out what I want to do with the game. Next is character creation and props! I love props, they make the game for me. Especially the map soaked in tea to make the paper look like parchment or whatever, classic.

Also, the other day I picked up a dremel set that has a few nylon brushes in it. Those things are awesome at taking paint off of simple greened models. A toothbrush is fine too but with the dremel you don't get the finger rawness! What I am trying to say is that I made a small amount of progress on giving emo-wing a try. I think I want to put the army together, get some color on it and then just play it until I get decent with it. I usually try a new list once, if it gets stomped then I make a new one without every giving it a chance. Gonna try to stick with the same list, or a similar one for a bit and practice with it. We'll see how it goes.

Ok, I know, anemic post but I have a few whiskies in me and it is time to hit the hay so I can ascend to the gates of heaven tonight.

Oh yeah, here's a shooting star for you
